Bio:

She is a scholar of modern Arabic literature and literary culture whose interdisciplinary work engages literary criticism, book history, sociology of literature, and women’s and gender studies. Her current book project, Literary Networks: Publishing Egypt’s Nineties Generation, is the first extended, in-depth study of the novelists of an influential contemporary Egyptian literary group and their publishers known as Egypt’s “nineties generation,” and it examines their emergence in the 1990s and development up to the Jan. 25th revolution of 2011. Through close readings of Arabic novels and other texts, quantitative and qualitative analysis of unpublished catalogues, and archival research and original interviews, this socio-literary investigation argues that publishers, not just texts and authors, were central to the nineties generation and explores what might be gained when we expand our view of literary movements to include traditionally peripheral institutions.
