Counselor Education Minor

A minor in counseling will introduce you to various fields in the counseling profession, including school counseling; mental health counseling; and marriage, couples, and family counseling.

You will have the opportunity to study under counseling professors who are well known and respected in the profession and have years of experience as counselors in the field. The minor is ideal for students interested in pursuing graduate degrees in counseling or related professions and will introduce you to the numerous career opportunities in the exciting field of counseling.

 

Typical Coursework

The counseling minor encompasses a broad range of courses designed to introduce you to the amazing opportunities within the counseling profession.  The minor program includes five required courses plus your choice of one elective. 

Core Courses (15 Hours)

  • EDCE 210: Career Planning and Development
  • EDCE 340: Counseling Through a Multicultural Lens: Understanding Self and Others
  • EDCE 350: Interpersonal Communication Skills
  • EDCE 360: Introduction to the Counseling Profession
  • EDCE 370: Love and Healthy Relationships (beginning in Fall 2025)* or
    • EDCE 570 Seminar in Counseling (if taken prior to Fall 2025)*

Elective Course (3 Hours) – Select one from:

  • EDCE 570 Seminar in Counseling*
  • EDFI 300 - Schools in Communities
  • PSYC 301 - Psychology of Marriage
  • PSYC 310 - Psychology of Women
  • SOCY 301 - Sex and Gender
  • SOCY 305 - Sociology of Families

*Beginning in Fall 2025, EDCE 370 will be replacing EDCE 570 as a required course in the core. EDCE 570 will continue to count in the Core for students who took the course prior to Fall 2025. Beginning in Fall 2025, those who have not yet taken EDCE 570 should register for EDCE 370 to meet the core requirement. Also beginning in Fall 2025, EDCE 570 will be an option in the elective section. Students may not use EDCE 570 to meet both a Core requirement and the elective requirement.
